Vele handjes .........
De kinderen hadden twee weken vakantie en het regenseizoen is afgelopen. Dat was een goed moment om met elkaar het onkruid weg te halen en het gras te maaien. We hebben een datum geprikt en alle kinderen gevraagd om klokslag acht uur aanwezig te zijn. De opkomst viel tegen maar tegen tien uur was ongeveer de helft van de kinderen op komen dagen om een handje mee te helpen. Het onkruid is verwijderd en doordat er geen regen meer valt tot november groeit het ook niet. De beloning voor de kinderen was een welverdiende lolly.

Er is een nieuwe trend onder de tienerjongens. Eerst kwam er eentje met een bril met een zwart montuur. Toen ik de bril eens goed inspecteerde, bleken er geen glazen in te zetten. Grote hilariteit toen ik dat ontdekte. Nog geen week later kwam de volgende met een bril. Ook hier zaten geen glazen in. Waarom draag je een bril als je het niet nodig hebt? We zien er beter uit met bril, was het antwoord.
Een maand geleden zijn de eerste vaccinaties geleverd in Zambia. Dit is via het programma COVAX van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie. De vaccinaties zijn bedoeld voor het zorgpersoneel, kwetsbaren en ouderen. Mijn conclusie: dan ben ik voorlopig nog niet aan de beurt. Ruim twee weken werd er gestart met d.jpg)
e vaccinaties in Mkushi en via een WhatsApp groep begreep ik dat het iedereen in aanmerking kwam voor een vaccinatie zolang de voorraad strekt. Ik ben gelijk de volgende dag naar het ziekenhuis gegaan. Op de veranda van het ziekenhuis werd er gevaccineerd. Ik verwachtte een lange rij maar er was slechts één persoon voor mij. Er werd nog wel even gevraagd of ik wel in Mkushi woonde. Mijn Zambiaanse identiteitskaart kon dat bevestigen en na een negatieve sneltest ben ik gevaccineerd. Veel sneller dan ik verwacht had. Ik ben vorige week terug geweest om een vaccinatiekaart op te halen en er werd niet meer gevaccineerd op de veranda. Bij navraag bleek dat er bijna niemand meer komt voor een vaccinatie en dat het nu in het ziekenhuis gebeurd. De verpleegkundigen gaan nu naar de omliggende dorpen. Ook hier is de opkomst ronduit teleurstellend. Soms komen er maar acht mensen om ingeënt te worden. Er gaan veel geruchten (o.a. dat je onvruchtbaar wordt) en hierdoor heerst er veel wantrouwen. De mensen baseren zich op verhalen van anderen want een groot deel van de mensen hebben zelf geen toegang tot informatie omdat ze geen televisie of internet hebben. De overheid doet er veel aan om de mensen te voorzien van de juiste informatie maar het wantrouwen blijft groot. Ik ben blij met mijn vaccinatie en ga begin juli terug voor de tweede.
